Thrips
Adult western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis.Photo by Jack Kelly Clark.Thrips on VegetablesThrips are very tiny insects that infest many ornamental and vegetable plants. The insect is small; so small in fact you need a magnifying glass to see them. They infest the flower buds mostly but can also infest leaves.Thrips feed by consuming plant juices they obtain by wounding plant tissues. Their feeding causes leaves to turn brown on the edges, develop a silvery color, and become distorted and curl or cup upward. They are found on a wide range of plants but are especially attracted to tomatoes and roses. Thrips are hard to find. The easiest way to look for the insect is to tap rose buds or tomato leaves over a white piece of paper. Smear the paper with your finger and look for any stains that might appear from the squashed insects. This is also a good way to look for spider mites. The key to controlling thrips is to find them early and apply a labeled insecticide. Vegetables: Sevin,
